An island you cross inward.

Rainforest, ruins, reef and hill country inside 65,000 km² — close enough that you can wake in cloud forest and sleep beside the Indian Ocean. Five pages: what’s wild, what’s alive, what’s on the plate, where to go, and what to know first.

Step over the stone

The name

Sandakada pahana.

The half-moon slab at the foot of temple steps, and the thing this site is built from. It is read from the outside in, and the dial in the corner of your screen turns its bands as you scroll.

  1. FlamesගිනිThe outer rim of fire — the world of desire you step in from.
  2. Elephant, horse, lion, bullසතර සතුන්Four animals in procession, read as the stages of a life.
  3. Liya velaලියවැලThe creeper — growth, attachment, the tangle of wanting.
  4. HansaහංසGeese carrying lotus buds, the traditional mark of discernment.
  5. Half lotusනෙළුම්The centre. You stand on the step above it, not on the stone.

Interpretations of the bands vary between scholars and between periods — the Kandyan-era stones drop the bull entirely, out of respect for Hindu sensibilities. What is not in doubt is the instruction: step over it.

Orientation

What sits where.

The central highlands split the island in two. Everything west and south of them is the wet zone — rainforest, tea, most of the people. North and east is the dry zone, built around man-made reservoirs that are two thousand years old and still working.
